What they will learn;

Dhamma

The syllabus of Junior Part 1, and the following;

  • The 6 special knowledge of the Buddha (Shad – asadharana Nana) and 10 Powers of the Buddha (Dasa – Tatagata Bala)
  • The names of books of the Vinaya Pitaka, the main divisions, and their commentaries
  • Important events in the life of the Buddha from Birth up to the end of the first 20 years after Enlightenment, with special reference to the following:
    • The First Sermon
    • Ordination of Yasa and his Friends
    • Commencement of Missionary activities
    • The Chief Disciples
    • Establishment of the Bhikkhuni Order
    • The Buddha’s visits to Sri Lanka
  • The Buddha’s lay Patrons – Anathapindika, Bimbisara, Visakha, Kosala, etc.
  • Lives of Venerable Ananda, Sariputta, Moggallana, and Maha Kassapa
  • Bhikkhunis Khema, Uppalawanna
  • Six Theravada Buddhist Councils and the first writing down of the Tripitaka
  • The 4 Noble Truths, with details of the Noble Eight-fold Path
  • Four sublime states – Brahma Vihara
  • The Ten (10) Perfections- Dasa Parami with a Jataka story to Illustrate each Parami
  • Dhammapada stanzas – 12, 33, 41, 43, 50, 53, 60, 61, 82, 85, 109, and
  1. They should be memorized and the meanings of the stanzas known

Abhidhamma

The syllabus of Junior Part 1 pulse a clear understanding of the 52 Mental Factors: Cetasika and their Classifications.

The composition of each Citta, Sangahanaya, and the identification of Cittas in which a particular Cetasika will be found – Sampayoganaya Nibbana, the definition, qualities, aspects, etc

Learning material (Books):

  • Guide to the Study of Theravada Buddhism (Dhamma & Abhidhamma) Book 2

Homework:

Homework is usually set up each week based on the lessons learned on the day, and parents could also expect some homework from the previous week’s lessons.

End of Year assessment:

Colombo YMBA Examination – Dhamma Paper 1 hour 30 minutes & Abhidhamma Paper 1 hour 30 minutes.
